Yamaha's Jones Takes ASBK Championship With Round To Spare

AUS2011060720790_ALTAUS2011060760770_ALTYRD's Mike Jones wrapped up the Australian 600cc Superstock Championship with a round to spare after a commanding performance at round five of the Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) held at Queensland Raceway over the weekend.

Jones, the recipient of the 2011 Reece Bancell scholarship award, entered the weekend with a huge points' gap over his nearest rivals but with the goal of tucking the championship trophy into his gear bag before the final round at Phillip Island later in the year, he had plenty to race for.

The Yamaha rider then turned it on for his home state crowd and hit that goal after taking pole position on Saturday and then racing to three victories in a dominant performance that stamped himself as the class rider of the 600cc Superstock field in 2011.

The weekend was reflective of Jones' form in the 2011 season as he has won pole position at every round contested so far and then, more impressively, gone unbeaten in every 600cc race. That is a string of 11 races where Jones has been the first to the checkered flag.

It has been a remarkable season for the teenage star of the future and to achieve the championship at Queensland Raceway, just up the road from his base in Nerang, was the icing on the cake for Jones and his team.

"2011 has been a great year for me," Jones offers excitedly. "I had a goal to win this championship but never did I expect to win it before the final round and to win every race along the way."

"It has been fantastic to race this year because of the people and the support I have behind me. Everyone at Yamaha and YRD have been unreal and the people involved in the Reece Bancell Scholarship have also been a vital part of my success this year."

"I can't thank everyone enough!" Jones finishes.

Yamaha's John Redding was also on hand to witness Jones claim his championship and couldn't be prouder of the results and success Mike has achieved in 2011.

"Mike has showed enormous improvement in 2011 and to win this championship in the style and manner that he has is a credit to himself and the people around him."

"I believe it's the first time that a rider has won a national championship in such dominating fashion and this sets Mike up as a rider of the future."

"On behalf of everyone at YRD and Yamaha, we congratulate Mike and his team on a job well done!"

But just as the Jones celebration party was getting fired into life, Jones hopped a Sunday Night flight to Asia where he will contest round two of the Asian Road Race Championships in Indonesia. He will return for the final ASBK round of the year to be held at Phillip Island.

Brayden shines at Round 2 of Vic Titles

braydenMotortrack Accessories Racing heads to the second round of the Victorian Roadrace Titles that was conducted on 16th & 17th April at Winton Motor Raceway.  Mototrack Racing was entered into the Supersport 600 and Open over 500's events.

We headed up there on the Thursday for an early morning practice session on the Friday morning, Brayden had never been to Winton before whilst Steve has been there on four occasions.  Steve decided to sit out practice and help Brayden get out on the track for practice, first session and Brayden is doing 1:40's whilst learning the lines.

The day only saw four sessions completed due to the late start, Brayden had reduced his time to 1:36 by the end of the day, this time would place him mid field and a good time for someone who has never been around the track.

Arrive at the track on Saturday morning and place a fresh set pf tyres on both bikes.  First qualifying session out and Steve qualifies 6th will a personal best of 1:33.990 and Brayden qualifies 7th with a great time of 1:34.478.  Next over 500's qualifying sees the results reversed when Brayden finds his rhythm around Winton, Brayden qualifies 8th with a time of 1:32.702 and Steve 10th with a time of 1:34.911.

The weekend proved very exciting with Brayden getting the better of Steve all weekend despite Brayden highsiding in Race 2 of the over 500's.

Brayden's times are fantastic for a first timer at the track with a personal best of 1:31.913 and Steve managed a Personal best of 1:32.365 and finished 3rd in Race 3 of Supersport.  Steve left the track in Race 2 of the Supersport race and could only regain a few spots to finish 12th.

Congratulations to Brayden who finished 3rd Overall C Grader in Supersport whilst Steve finished 6th.

Mikes Jones - Southern Downs Success

Southern Downs Success

This week Reece Bancell Scholarship/Yamaha rider Mike Jones headed back to his home state of Queensland to compete in the Southern Downs Challenge at Morgan Park Raceway.

Unfortunately extended heavy rain on Saturday forced an early closure to the day’s events, but not before Mike could set the fastest lap in practice/qualifying, leaving him with Pole Position for Sunday.

The first race on Sunday presented extremely tough conditions, with a track which was too dry for wet tyres but not dry enough for the Dunlop control tyres. Mike decided to run with the control tyre: “The aim was to finish the race and gain experience in that situation, which is exactly what I did.”

After the difficult conditions of the first race the rain continued to pour and Mike chose wet tyres for both the final races. After some intense battling and a few ‘close moments’ Mike took 2nd place in both races, finishing 3rd overall for the weekend.

“Overall it was a great weekend and I was very happy with the results considering the difficult conditions. I gained more experience and learnt about intermediate track conditions, both with the use of wet and dry tyres. Now for the future I am more prepared for situations such as these and I can recall on this knowledge to help my on-track performances.”

Next Mike heads to the Top End to continue his pursuit of the ASBK Superstock 600 crown. “I’m really looking forward to Round 3 of the ASBK Championships at Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin. I’m leading the Superstock 600 category and I hope to extend my lead even further at a track which I enjoy.”

Clean Sweep for Mike Jones at Symmons Plains

mikeIn a true testament to his astonishing talent, young Mike Jones has repeated his first round performance by producing another clean sweep of the ASBK Superstock 600 category – this time, remarkably, at a track he had never before ridden on the 600.

Round 2 at Symmons Plains (TAS) on March 4-6th saw the Reece Bancell Scholarship recipient once again start the weekend by taking pole position with a new qualifying record. Shortly afterwards, even after a slow start had relegated him to eighth place, Mike converted pole into a race win. In an exciting display of determination, one by one ‘Mad Mike’ picked off the riders in front to regain the lead, striding home 4.913s clear of second place. In the same process he set a new lap record of 57.400s – over half a second faster than the previous.

Race 2 saw a better start from Mike and he took the lead almost immediately, churning out fast lap after fast lap with no more than 0.35s variation – the level of consistency further testimony to the young rider’s depth of skill. No challenges came from behind and Mike crossed the line an impressive 8.907s ahead of the next rider.

The final race of the weekend again had Mike with a good start and the race lead, until a heart-stopping moment on the last turn of lap one dropped him back to third position. Mike recovered quickly, and only two laps later had recaptured the lead and shortly after checked out once more, wrapping up the race and the round.

"The season has started with a 100% strike rate – a clean sweep at Round 1 at Phillip Island, and another here at Round 2 in Symmons Plains. This weekend went perfectly, with the help of Adam from the California Superbike School and Stewart from SW Racing I was able to be very fast with minimal track time. I'm looking forward to another good ride at Round 3 at Hidden Valley in a few weeks time" said Mike.

2011 is Mike’s second season in ASBK Superstock 600, his 2010 debut season, in which he finished 3rd overall, clearly laying the groundwork for the calculated domination we are witnessing today.

Next weekend Mike switches series and heads to Eastern Creek for the opening round of the AFX-SBK Championship. Follow him at www.mikejonesracing.com.au.
